Waikato District Council has eight general wards and two Maaori wards, with 13 councilors and one Mayor elected to give fair and effective representation for the district.
“Wards” are areas of the district that have been determined by population and
communities of interest.
Following a representation review, Maaori wards were included for the first time in the 2022 elections. Like Maaori electorates within the New Zealand Parliament, the purpose of Maaori wards to ensure that Maaori are represented in local government decision making.
Wards, boundaries and representation arrangements are reviewed every six years as per the Local Electoral Act 2001.
